Required fields & placeholders

Custom Attendee Fields ·3 min read ·Updated June 2026
You're here because

some answers are mandatory, and some should come pre-filled to save the buyer time.

Two optional settings on each field control how strictly it behaves and how you guide the answer.

Required fields

Mark a field required and the attendee can’t complete checkout without answering it – it is validated at checkout on both classic and block checkout. Use it for anything you truly must have at the door – a full name, a consent answer, an emergency contact – and leave optional extras un-required so they don’t block a sale.

Placeholder text

Give a text, number, email, phone or textarea field a placeholder – greyed-out hint text shown inside the empty field – to guide the answer (for example “e.g. vegetarian”). It is only a hint to the buyer; it is not saved as their answer. The Placeholder box appears for every field type in the editor, but the hint only shows for text, textarea, number, email and phone fields – it’s ignored on date, dropdown, radio and checkbox fields.

Balance friction and data: every required field is one more thing between the buyer and “pay”. Require what you’ll actually use; make the rest optional.
